Մայր Թերեզան կաթոլիկ միանձնուհի էր, «Գթասրտության օրդեն»-ի հիմնադիրը, որը ծառայում էր հիվանդներին և աղքատներին։

Նոբելյան մրցանակի դափնեկիր է (1979)։ Թերեզա անունը ստացել է 1931 թվականին ի պատիվ 1927 թվականին սրբերի դասին դասված ֆրանսուհի Թերեզայի (Թերեզա Լիզյեցի), որը հայտնի էր իր բարությամբ և գթասրտությամբ։


Որոշ տվյալներով նա ունի Հայկական ծագում, ինչի մասին Վազգեն Առաջինն է հայտնել Մայր Թերեզայի հետ հանդիպումից հետո։ 1988 թվականի Սպիտակի երկրաշարժից հետո, երբ Մայր Թերեզան ժամանել էր Հայաստան, հանդիպեց նաև Վազգեն Առաջինի հետ:

Հանդիպման ընթացքում Մայր Թերեզան կաթողիկոսին պատմել է իր հայկական ծագման մասին: Նրա իսկական անուն ազգանունը Ագնեսսա Բոյաջյան է, հայրը Արևմտյան Հայաստանից է գաղթել Ալբանիա, մայրն էլ ալբանուհի քրիստոնյա է։
