Պարզվել է՝ Քարլին այդ ուղևորության ընթացքում վարակված ձուկ է կերել, որը վատ է տապակված եղել: Որպես հետևանք՝ նրա օրգանիզմ է ընկել մահաբեր մակաբույծ (գնատոստոմոզ), որն այդ ամբողջ ընթացքում Քարլիի օրգանիզմը կերել է ներսից:

Քարլիին ճիշտ ախտորոշել են 2 ամիս առաջ: Մակաբույծից ազատվելու համար բժիշկները նրան հաբ են տվել, որի շնորհիվ՝ որդը սատկել է սովից:
