Ռուսաստանը «երբեք նպատակ չի ունեցել որևէ տարածք գրավել, այլ ցանկացել է պաշտպանել ռուսներին. այս մասին, ՏԱՍՍ-ի փոխանցմամբ, ասել է ՌԴ ԱԳ նախարար Սերգեյ Լավրովը:

«Ես ուզում եմ ևս մեկ անգամ ընդգծել. մենք երբեք չենք խոսել այն մասին, որ մեզ պարզապես անհրաժեշտ է գրավել ինչ-որ տարածքներ։ Ո՛չ Ղրիմը, ո՛չ Դոնբասը, ո՛չ Նովոռոսիան երբեք մեր նպատակը չեն եղել որպես տարածքներ։ Մեր նպատակն էր պաշտպանել մարդկանց, ռուս ժողովրդին, որը դարեր շարունակ ապրել է այս հողերի վրա, որը զարգացրել է այս հողերը, արյուն է թափել դրանց համար և՛ Ղրիմում, և՛ Դոնբասում, ստեղծել է քաղաքներ՝ Օդեսա, Նիկոլաև, շատ ուրիշներ, նավահանգիստներ, գործարաններ, ֆաբրիկաներ», - նշել է Լավրովը։
