Ավելի վաղ ռուսական աղբյուրները հայտնել էին, որ Ռոստովը Մեծ Ռոստով անվանափոխելու մասին օրինագիծ է ուղարկվել Պետդումա, որը հավանության է արժանացել։
Այն Ռուսաստանի հնագույն քաղաքներից է, չնայած քաղաքի պաշտոնական անունը եղել է Ռոստով, սակայն Դոնի Ռոստովից տարբերելու համար մարդիկ հաճախ անվանվանել են Մեծ Ռոստով։
