Ինչպես գրում է healthylifetricks.com-ը` ամերիկացի գիտնականների խումբը ուսումնասիրություն է անցկացրել 2500 ծխողների շրջանում:   Արդյունքները ցույց են տվել, որ նրանց 32 տոկոսը օրվա առաջին ծխախոտն օգտագործում է արթնանալուց հետո 5 րոպեի ընթացքում, 31 տոկոսը` 3-30 րոպեի ընթացքում, 18 տոկոսը` առավոտյան սուրճից հետո: Միայն 19 տոկոսն է պատասխանել, որ առնվազն մեկ ժամ սպասում է արթնանալուց հետո օրվա առաջին ծխախոտը ծխելու համար:

 Արթնանալուն պես ծխողների մոտ ծխախոտի թունավոր նյութերի կողմնակի հետևանքների ավելի բարձր մակարդակ է գրանցվել, քան նրանց մոտ, ովքեր ծխել սկսում են 30 րոպե անց: Գիտնականները պնդում են, որ առավոտյան  վաղ ծխել սկսողները թոքերի քաղցկեղ զարգացնելու ավելի մեծ վտանգ ունեն:
