Բրիտանացի գիտնականները նշում են, որ քաղցկեղի առաջին նշաններն առաջանում են ձեռքերին՝ այտուցների, ճաքերի, կոշտուկների ձևով։

Ցավոք, այս ախտանշանները սովորաբար անտեսվում են՝ բժիշկի դիմելու փոխարեն։ Ժամանակին բժշկի կողմից ստուգվելու, քաղցկեղը վաղ շրջանում հայտնաբերելու դեպքում մեծանում է դրա հաջող բուժման հավանականությունը։
